Abstract
Emisija RuPaul's Drag Race jedan je od rijetkih primjera televizijskih programa koje se fokusiraju na queer identitete te koja je premostila svoj supkulturan oblik i proniknula u mainstream okvire. Nadalje, sama emisija pruža jedinstvenu perspektivu u načine na koji rodni identitet, seksualnost, rasa, klasa, etnicitet i tjelesna sposobnost vrše interakciju sa ljudskih životima, pritom angažirajući šire, masovne publike. Ovaj rad, stoga, istražuje šire povijesti kontrakulture i istražuje kako je drag slijedio uzorke punka kroz svoje putovanje ka hegemonijskom obliku. Vodeći se queer retorikom i nizom vrijednosti estetike dobivenih u punku, drag iznosi generativnu i dugotrajnu simbiozu između odnosa centar-periferija, što informira ulogu RuPaul's Drag Racea izvan svojih reality-show okvira. Nadalje, ovaj rad etablira primarne teme RuPual's Drag Racea te postavlja pitanje ideološke konstrukcije draga, obzirom na odnose centar, periferija i njihovu kooptaciju. Shodno tome, okrupnjava teorije kulturalnih studija, queer teorije, feminističkih studija, i opće sfere komunikacija pri svojoj analizi.
Abstract (english)
RuPaul’s Drag Race is one of the few reality television shows focusing on queer identified individuals, whilst also surpassing its subcultural framework and made it into mainstream consciousness. Furthermore, the show provides a unique perspective on the ways that gender identity, sexuality, class, race, ethnicity and body-ableness intersect and interact in people’s lives. This thesis, therefore, engages with wider histories of subcultures and examines how drag has followed the patterns of punk through its travel towards a hegemonic framework. With radical queer politics and punk aesthetics and values, drag seems to reveal the generative and long-standing symbiosis between these two energies – a symbiosis that informs RuPaul’s Drag Race, but that also extends beyond its reality-show boundaries. Moreover, this thesis establishes RuPaul’s Drag Race primary themes, whilst imposing questions on the ideological constructions of drag, based on its center, periphery and its co-optation. As such, it utilizes theories from cultural studies, feminist studies, queer theory, and general communications sphere within its analysis.
