Abstract
Građanski rat u Siriji eskalirao je iz sukoba između prosvjednika protiv autoritarnog sirijskog režima i predsjednika Sirije Bašara al-Asada 2011. godine te traje još i danas. S vremenom se rat u Siriji pretvorio u najveću humanitarnu katastrofu od Drugog svjetskog rata. Na valu Arapskog proljeća građani su zahtijevali demokratske slobode i slabljenje stiska u kojem je autoritarni režim držao Siriju. U ratu su se sukobile opozicijske frakcije, Kurdi, teroristi Islamske države i snage lojalne al-Asadovom režimu. Kompleksna geopolitička situacija dodatno se zakomplicirala uplitanjem vanjskih aktera kao što su Iran, Rusija, Sjedinjene Američke Države i Europska unija. Ovaj diplomski rad analizira vanjsku politiku Europske unije u kontekstu sirijskog građanskog rata te problematizira njezine ključne smjernice, načine manifestacije i uporabu raznih instrumenata i strategija da bi se stabiliziralo stanje i spriječio daljnji sukob. Budući da Europska unija ne koristi vojne resurse, na primjeru Sirije analizira se soft power pristup u kontekstu humanitarnih intervencija i politike izgradnje mira.
Abstract (english)
The Syrian civil war escalated from the conflict between protesters against the authoritarian Syrian regime and Syria's President Bashar al-Assad in 2011 and is still ongoing today. In time the war in Syria has turned into the largest humanitarian catastrophe since the World War II. In the wake of the Arab Spring, citizens demanded democratic freedoms and a pressure release in which the authoritarian regime held Syria. In the war, the opposition fractions, the Kurds, the Islamic State terrorists and the forces loyal to al-Assad regime were clashed. The complex geopolitical situation becomes further complicated by the interference of external actors such as Iran, Russia, the United States and the European Union. This thesis analyzes the European Union's foreign policy in the context of the Syrian civil war and discusses its key guidelines, ways of manifesting and use of various instruments and strategies to stabilize the situation and preventing further conflict. Since the European Union does not use military resources, the soft power approach in the context of humanitarian interventions and peace-building policies is being analyzed on the example of Syria.
