The most common use of stents in medicine is in the treatment of atherosclerosis. It is a disorder of blood vessels where there is a narrowing of the inner diameter. The narrowing of the internal diameter is manifested by the accumulation of a sticky substance – plaque. Stents can be grouped according to several basic criteria, from the basic material used for manufacturing (metal or polymer) to the method of stent production or division according to the method of installation, i.e. expansion in the blood vessel. Depending on the method of installation, stents are divided into balloon-expanding (usually made of smart materials with shape recall). The choice of material in combination with the manufacturing method and design represent the biggest challenge in the search for an optimal stent today. Since polymer stents with material recall can be produced by additive manufacturing, their geometry can be arbitrary and customized for the patient, unlike metal stents. As a first step to determine the optimal geometry for an individual patient, this paper will analyze the influence of plaque shape on the medical effectiveness of the stent. In the paper, several simplified models of the carotid artery with plaque were defined in order to show the stress results in conventional and Favus stents after their implantation. Wall models with different plaque geometries and a conventional stent model were modeled in the SolidWorks software package. In the program package Abaqus 6.14-4, the behavior of theatherosclerotic vessel will be described by the Holzapfel-Gasser-Ogden (HGO) model, while the isotropic hyperelastic material described by Neo-Hooke model will joins the plaque and stent. The numerical procedure of implanting two types of stents made of shape memory polymers will be shown on three examples of a carotid artery with plaque.
