The subject of this master's thesis is a design proposal for ensuring adjustable contact between a bicycle and a cyclist. Pedals with adjustable contact have been on the market for many years, so an analysis of the most famous and commercially successful companies in this field has been performed. It is found that there's a need for a design which will allow easier adjustment of the foot position on the pedal, as well as offer insurance against unwanted release of contact with the pedal. Subsequently, a biomechanical analysis has been performed, from muscle activation to degrees of freedom of lower body parts while cycling. Various difficulties and injuries have also been studied. Their causes are presented through combination of professionals' experiences and knowledge gained by the biomechanical analysis. The importance of adjusting to the user has been presented, that is, the great damage of forcing the body to adapt to the bicycle. Some generally accepted guidelines for bicycle adaptation and proper posture have been displayed accordingly. Based upon the given requirements, a methodical assessment of problem-solving concepts has been done, complementary with sketches and descriptions. Before further analysis, the strengths and weaknesses expected from each of the concepts have been brought forward. Afterwards, the key characteristics and functions of concepts are evaluated. The concept which allows adjustment of the „Q“ factor, as well as ensures contact surfaces by form, is further developed. For the developed concept, a 3D model and technical documentation have been made in Creo Parametric 2.0 software package.
