Return on investment (ROI) analysis and a case-study of each investment present a vital part of modern-day Industrial Engineering, as well as business planning in general. If an investment requires significant funds, in case of failure entire company could suffer long-term consequences or even face going out of business. Therefore, significant importance is placed upon a quality investment study. This paper presents a return on investment analysis for a case of an investment into a CNC automation of a part of production process in a start-up company that manufactures components for small electric vehicles, mostly e-bikes, and assembles them or retrofits them onto bikes of customers, thus turning them into e-bikes. In order to conduct a quality analysis of possible production improvement, current state is analyzed using time and motion study. Focusing on a key production process part and measuring production time and quality levels, enhancement plan is proposed. A comparison is drawn by calculating the difference in production time and quality between current and the possible improved state. Key performance indicators are compiled, justifying the investment by taking into account productivity, lead time and production cycle. Market analysis explains the business opportunity behind the investment, while the comparison of production times between the current state of the process and the possible future automated process leads to a calculation of possible savings, from which the final break-even point is found.
