Health visitor service is a part of primary health protection system specific by the fact that the care to the patients is given at their homes, outside medical institutions. Hence the attitude of the health visitor is very important. An attitude is a tendency of a person to react positively or negatively to an event. The negative reactions are connected to a complex phenomenon of stigmatization. The stigmatization of psychiatric patients has a negative effect to the treatment of a patient. The health workers are expected not to stigmatize the mentally ill patients. Till present day, there is no published research on the negative attitudes of the health visitors towards the mentally ill patients. This research has been conducted in the Primorsko-goranska county Health centre in May of 2020. From the 66 health visitors employed by the Health centre the questionnaire has been completed by 50 of them. According to the research results, which were ran against Bogardus scale of social distancing and MICA-2 (mental illness: clinicians' attitudes scale), the health visitors have moderate attitudes and social distancing. The nurses with long career have been recognized as those with a larger social distance to the schizophrenic patients. A long career in the health visitor shows more negative attitudes and increased social distancing to the schizophrenic patients. The experience in working with mentally ill patients is connected to the positive attitudes and reduced social distancing. The nurses with MsC have shown more positive attitudes than the nurses with Bachelor degree. The health visitors coming from suburbs or country side have shown negative attitudes. Health visitors have largest social distance towards drug addicts then towards schizophrenic patients. The largest acceptance level is to the anxiety patients and lowest towards the drug addicts. It can be concluded that the majority of the results is in line with the consulted literature. The research results are showing the need for the nurses to increase experience with treatment of the mentally ill patients and education to fight the stigmatization.
