MATERIJAL I METODE: Istraživanje je provedeno nad skupinom studenata redovnog studija sestrinstva prve, druge i treće godine Fakulteta zdravstvenih studija Sveučilišta u Rijeci.
Abstract (english) INTRODUCTION: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is a life-saving technique useful in many emergencies, including drowning, suffocation, and injuries in children. It is performed when the child is unconscious, not breathing and has no heartbeat. Any cardiopulmonary resuscitation consists of providing artificial respiration and chest compressions. Research shows that the survival of children when cardiac arrest occurs outside the hospital is 6%, or 3% for newborns and 9% for children and adolescents, respectively. The difference between trying to save and not taking any action can be lethal and depend on someone’s life.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: Investigate the impact of three-year college education on the knowledge of full-time nursing students about procedures in cardiopulmonary resuscitation of children. Also, examine the readiness for response in cardiopulmonary resuscitation of children and determine whether there is a difference in responses with respect to the year of study that the subjects attend.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The research group consisted of first, second and third year full-time nursing students at the Faculty of Health Studies, University of Rijeka. A total of 62 respondents joined the survey. An online anonymous survey questionnaire developed by the authors of this research was used to collect the desired data. Statistical processing of the collected data was performed using a personal computer, using the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet program. The collected data were described and analyzed by various statistical methods.
RESULTS: There is a difference in the answers according to the year of study that the respondents attend. Third-year students have a better overall knowledge and are more willing to approach a child. As many as 66.7% of third-year respondents, 41.7% of second-year respondents and 29.4% of first-year respondents would join immediately and without fear. It can be concluded that the courses taken in connection with cardiopulmonary resuscitation of the child still provide some knowledge and security. Most of the respondents, 96,7% agreed that it is necessary to periodically update the knowledge and skills about cardiopulmonary resuscitation of children and that they want to learn and learn more about it.
CONCLUSION: The results obtained by this research indicate that the basic algorithms of life support are generally known to everyone, while certain specific procedures are not so well known and remembered by students. The field of cardiopulmonary resuscitation of children is insufficiently researched, most of the available scientific and research papers are based on cardiopulmonary resuscitation of adults.
