Muscle hypertrophy is the process of increasing muscle mass, and it occurs as an effect of long-term exercise. It is divided into myofibrillar and sarcoplasmic hypertrophy, the characteristics of which differ depending on the method of training. Signal mechanisms are responsible for initiating muscle growth; and here we include mechanical tension, metabolic stress, and muscle damage. Stimulation of muscle growth takes place by applying an appropriate resistance training program; by modifying training volume, training frequency, load, rest length, type of exercise, range of motion, sequence of exercises, and type of muscle activation, the musculoskeletal system and muscle adaptation are affected. Exposing muscles to exertion during training and gradually increasing the load, leads to damage to muscle fibers, and repair results in adjustment in terms of increasing size and strength. In addition to training, quality and balanced nutrition and adequate rest are equally important for achieving hypertrophy. For muscle growth, it is important to achieve an optimal caloric surplus by ingesting the necessary macronutrients in the form of protein, fat and carbohydrates. The greatest importance is attached to protein intake because they are directly responsible for muscle protein synthesis in the body which means they are needed in tissue regeneration after stress caused by training. Vitamins, minerals, trace elements and fiber should also be present in the diet. This paper provides an overview of general guidelines for stimulating muscle growth based on research and explains the whole process of muscle hypertrophy.
