Abstract (english) Celiac disease is a chronic, autoimmune systemic disease caused by gluten and related proteins occurring in people with genetic predisposition. The backbone of celiac treatment is a lifelike gluten-free diet, or avoiding products that contain wheat, rye or barley.
Objective of the research: Evaluation of parent/guardian satisfaction on education and information on the nutrition plan of children suffering from celiac disease in the Celiac Disease Association of Primorsko Goranska County, Rijeka.
Subjects and Methods: The survey included parents / guardians of children involved in the work of the Celiac Disease Association of Primorsko Goranska County, Rijeka. The research method was an anonymous, voluntary, written questionnaire that contained 30 questions. The survey was conducted in the Association from 01 March to 31 May 2017.
Results: According to results, celiac disease was mostly diagnosed between the first and the third year, 46% in girls and 28% in boys. Research results showed that 93% of parents were informed of the guidelines and rules of life-long-term diet necessary for successful control of celiac disease. Although there are many non-gluten products on the market, a third of respondents (31%) are not satisfied with their availability, while 78% of respondents are dissatisfied with the precision of defining food composition on product declarations. The main reason why respondents usually use the selected product is because the product is subsidized by the Croatian Institute for Health Insurance (53%). Only 62% of the respondents are familiar with their legally regulated rights, a third of those surveyed are unhappy with the availability of non-gluten products, while all respondents are aware of the importance of lifelong implementation of the guidelines for non-gluten diet.
Conclusion: Early diagnosis and implementation of the gluten-free diet are basis for successful treatment of celiac disease. The research showed parents' satisfaction with the information on the diet of 63% of the children with celiac disease. Although below the acceptable level of 75%, other test elements have shown a high level of satisfaction. It is therefore possible to conclude that parents are satisfied with the way in which education was organized, but not with the information they received because they often receive information through the research of websites rather than their doctors and nutritionists.
