i tretmanu šećerne bolesti.
oblik dijabetesa kojeg uzrokuju kombinacije različitih faktora. Uloga prehrane je međutim, ključni
faktor u cjelokupnoj kontroli ove bolesti. Prehrana bogata voćem, povrćem, biljem i začinima se
pokazala osobito korisna u kontroli stanja ove grupe pacijenata. Mediteranska prehrana i ostali
Abstract (english) Phytotherapy is the term which describes the usage of preparations from plants in treating
and preventing diseases, while phytopreparations are products made from plant parts.
Phytopreparations can be applied in the form of tea, tincture, lipid macerate, powder, integral
solutions and as essential oils. The use of plants for treating diseases goes far back into history and
makes the foundations for modern medicine. Over the years, people were also trying to apply herbal
preparations for treatment of diabetes. Accordingly, we witness a constant increase in numbers of
scientific publications on herbal medications and type 2 diabetes. Despite that, clinical efficacy of
herbal medications for treating diabetes has not been researched sufficiently and more data will be
required to establish their accurate efficiency, especially in the field of diabetes control and
treatment.
Diabetes mellitus is a condition which is characterized by pathologic hyperglycemia that is
uncontrollable due to lack of insulin activity. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is the most common form
of diabetes that is caused by combination of different factors. The role of nutrition is for example,
crucial in total control over type 2 diabetes. Diet rich in fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices has
shown to be especially useful in controlling the health state of diabetic patients. Mediterranean diet
and other diets based on plants can also be used as one of the acceptable approaches for reaching
control over glycemia.
Plants can be used as complementary and alternative therapy, especially in metabolic
diseases such as diabetes, but they are still not used as standalone drugs in therapeutic approaches.
Indeed, it is still required to study their effects in controlled clinical trials where modern
standardized extracts may be used so that the effects on hyperglycemia in patients might be
unequivocally documented. Trials in this area are necessary for a better understanding of
connection between hypoglycemia and chemical composition of phytopreparations.
