Abstract Uvod: U današnje vrijeme neaktivnost nastaje kao posljedica sjedilačkog načina života.
Abstract (english) Introduction: Nowadays, inactivity occurs as a consequence of a sedentary lifestyle. Through exercise, energy is consumed and tissue metabolism is accelerated and thus, exercise contributes to prevention of many diseases. It has a beneficial effect on the prevention of various cardiovascular diseases. It lowers the resting heart rate, increases blood volume and lowers cholesterol levels. Appropriate load or exercise stimulates muscle tissue and has a positive effect on the musculo-skeletal system. The accumulation of excessive subcutaneous adipose tissue is also prevented. Practicing exercise primarily affects: mood, self-esteem, self-confidence, cognitive functions, dealing with new and unpredictable stressful situations, and many psychological disorders. Regular exercise reduces the risk of disease and improves the quality of life in daily activities.
Aim: The main aim of this study was to identify and statistically show the impact of exercise on better mental status in physiotherapy and nursing students.
Subjects and Methods: The total number of respondents in the study »Relationship between exercise and mental status in physiotherapy and nursing students« were 103 students, out of which 54 physiotherapy students and 49 nursing students at the Faculty of Health Studies in Rijeka. Respondents completed the following questionnaires: 1. online questionnaire of informative nature, 2. Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation - Outcome Measure (CORE-OM) questionnaire to assess psychological distress.
Results: After statistical analysis, the following was determined: there is no statistically significant association between exercise and mental status in physiotherapy and nursing students. Finally, it was found that there was no statistically significant difference in psychological status between individual studies (p=0,43). Both groups of students were categorized according to the CORE-OM questionnaire into results that indicated a lower level of psychological difficulties and did not stand out from each other.
Conclusion: This study primarily presents the importance of regular physical exercise in order to improve health and thus prevent various mental and physical comorbidities. It is unquestionable that physical activity has many positive effects on psychological well-being but in this study this association has not been determined as statistically significant.
