HPV or human papillomavirus is the most common sexually transmitted disease with millions of new infections every year. The aim of this research was to assess the knowledge of Secondary school Ivanec students about HPV. 104 subjects participated in the research, regardless of age and gender. The research was conducted using an online anonymous questionnaire that was created specifically for this research. The research was conducted in august 2022. The results showed that an extremely small number of respondents were aware of the number of HPV types that exist and that less than a third of students were aware of its prevalence. Along with the knowledge about a greater number of sexual partners as a risk factor, there is somewhat less knowledge when specifying other risk factors for the development of infection. Despite the knowledge about sexual transmission of infection, there is a lack of knowledge about other possible ways of transmission of infection. As a possible consequence of HPV infection, 60% of respondents were aware of the possible appearance of genital warts in low-risk infection, while 78% indicated the development of cervical cancer as a possible consequence of high-risk HPV infection. In addition, almost 60% of respondents indicated the development of penile cancer as a possible consequence of high-risk HPV infection. The respondents showed an extremely low level of knowledge in the field of HPV treatment. In order to preserve health, it is important to educate young people about the human papillomavirus. Raising awareness, educating about responsible sexual behavior and promoting vaccines are the only ways to control the spread of infection and prevent the potential development of cancer.
