Introduction: Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, degenerative disease of the central nervous system whose main feature is inflammatory damage to the myelin sheath of nerves in the central nervous system. Most patients with multiple sclerosis, in addition to impaired neurological functioning, also have impaired mental health. The risk of depression, stress, and anxiety has been shown to be higher in patients with multiple sclerosis than in the healthy population. Aim of the study:To determine the impact of taking multiple sclerosis therapy on anxiety depression in patients with multiple sclerosis. Additional objectives of the study were to determine the level of anxiety and depression of subjects with multiple sclerosis depending on: gender, age, employment and marital status, clinical form of multiple sclerosis, duration of the disease. Subjects and methods: The study included a sample of 197 patients with multiple sclerosis who tried to investigate the level of anxiety and depression using the STAI scale for self-assessment of anxiety as a state and personality traits and to determine the level of depression using the BDI scale. Results: No statistically significant difference was found in anxiety levels between subjects taking multiple sclerosis therapy and those not taking it. It was also found that there were no statistically significant differences in levels of anxiety and depression among respondents by variables by gender, age, by marital status, and parenthood. It was also found that there were no statistically significant differences either in the variables related to the clinical form of MS from the subjects or in the duration of the disease. Statistical significance in levels of anxiety and depression was determined only by work status variables. Conclusion: Patients with multiple sclerosis, in addition to regular neurological treatment, should be able to receive timely psychological help. A quick reaction to changes in mental functioning increases the chances of a better quality of life and overall functioning. Given the high prevalence of anxiety and depression in patients with multiple sclerosis, it is necessary to actively screen for anxiety depression among patients and provide them with adequate treatment.
