INTRODUCTION: Occupational stress can be defined as a situation in which work-related factors act on an employee, changing his/her psychological and physiological state in such a way that the person is forced to deviate from normal functioning. Nurse technicians at ED are exposed to various dangers and stressful situations every day. Every day they witness seriously ill patients, trauma, and death, they experience conflict situations with patients, companions, and other healthcare professionals, they face a lack of staff and resources for work, overtime and other factors that affect the increased amount of stress. RESEARCH GOAL: The main goal of this research work was to investigate the level of perceived professional stress among employees of the ED in CHC Rijeka, and the influence of length of service and type of occupation on perceived stress. RESPONDENTS AND METHODS: The survey was conducted on a convenient sample of 50 respondents. The respondents are employees of ED in CHC Rijeka, localities Rijeka and Sušak. The survey was conducted during June 2023 through an anonymous online survey shared via social networks. The validated "Questionnaire on stressors in the workplace of hospital health workers" by Dr. sc. Milan Milošević from 2009. The original questionnaire consists of 37 items, which refer to workplace stressors, and the stress level is assessed on a Likert scale from 1 to 5. RESULTS: A total of 50 respondents participated in the research, M 40%, and F 60%. The median age is 30 years (IQR=26.25-39.25). The largest number of respondents are aged 20-29. The most common occupation of the respondents is nurse/technician (76%). It has been proven that ED employees are exposed to a high level of stress, but only in the factor related to the organization of work and finances. Employees with work experience >5 years have a higher level of stress than those with work experience <5 years, while occupation has no influence on the perceived level of stress. CONCLUSION: The leading factor that leads to professional stress among ED employees in CHC Rijeka, especially nurses’ technicians, is "Workplace organization and financial issues". Accordingly, the persons in charge of management and work organization should act to improve this situation, so that there is no further burnout of employees, and consequently an increased number of sick days, the attrition of the workforce to other workplaces, and even a change of profession, which creates a vicious circle.
