AIM:To examine the relationship between the level of pain and the extent of damage in patients suffering from diabetic polyneuropathy. METHODS: The research was conducted in the electrophysiological laboratory of the special hospital Thalassotherapia Opatija on 50 patients of both sex, males (n=25) and females (n=25), age from 46 to 84. The research included people suffering for diabetes type 1 and 2. The exclusion criteria were trauma to the spine and lower extremities, tumors of the spine and spinal cord due to a very similar clinical picture and the inability to separate the symptoms caused by the mentioned from the symptoms caused by diabetes. The questionnaire created for the purpose of this research, which contains 4 parts, was used for the work. Sociodemographic data in the first part and questions about alcohol and nicotine consumption, the second part contains data on the disease, duration and values of glycated hemoglobin HbA1c. The third part of the questionnaire consists of the VAS pain scale and questions related to complaints and symptoms. The last part of the questionnaire includes information on psychophysical activity, diet and education. RESULTS:50 respondents, 25 men and 25 women, with an average age of 64.82, participated in the research. All subjects were patients of the special hospital Thalassotherapia Opatija and are suffering from type 1 or 2 diabetes. The results of the study showed that with the duration of symptoms of diabetic polyneuropathy, the level of pain increases and it was observed that inactive subjects rated the pain as stronger. It canbe seenthat the highest level of glycated hemoglobin is found in moderately severe sensory, motor and sensorimotor limb damage.
