Abstract Uvod: Multipla skleroza je kronična upalna demijelinizacijska bolest središnjeg živčanog sustava obilježena propadanjem mijelinske ovojnice živčanih vlakana i autoimunom reakcijom.
Abstract (english) Introduction: Multiple sclerosis is a chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system characterized by decay of the myelin sheath of the nerve fibers and an autoimmune reaction. There is an unknown cause and an unpredictable course. It is assumed that several different factors interact, such as genetic predisposition, environment, and
exposure to the virus during childhood. The disease lasts for a long time, with an average of several years. Initial symptoms usually occur between the ages of 15 and 45. Some of the most common are fatigue, motor and sensory disorders, and psychic manifestations. In order to reduce them and maintain / increase the functional capacity and quality of life of the affected person, continuous physical activity is required.
Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the impact of exercise on fatigue and anxietydepressive disorder in patients with MS.
Participants and methods: The study was conducted at the Multiple Sclerosis Association in Rijeka, with a total of 49 subjects - 24 patients with MS and 25 healthy persons. Most of the diseased subjects has had relapsing - remitting form of MS. More women than men participated in the study, which also confirms the fact that MS occurs more frequently in the female population. Exercises were performed twice a week for 60 minutes during a period of 2 months. The exercise program included breathing exercises, stretching exercises, exercises to increase the volume of movement and muscle strength, and balance and coordination exercises under the supervision of a physiotherapist. The following questionnaires were used to evaluate the participants: CORE-OM, MFIS, SF - 36 and subjective questionnaire on the impact of the exercises performed on overall health and motivation.
Results: After the statistical analysis of the results, there was a difference in the values before and after the exercise program. In the MS patients who performed the exercise, there was improvement in quality of life in the form of reducing fatigue and psychological distress. Also, there was an increased motivation to continue exercising at home.
Conclusion: Accordingly, it can be concluded that the exercise program has had a positive impact on the reducing the symptoms of the diseased and thus increasing their quality of life.
