Abstract (english) Pointing out to students the barriers to a successful communication will facilitate their functioning in future practice, so it is important to study the perception of barriers nursing students have to a successful communication with patients.
The aim of this research was to examine the nursing students’ perception of barriers to a more successful communication with patients at different years of study and to check whether there is a difference in the perception of barriers to a more successful communication with patients by nursing students at different years of study, different types of study and different institutions (places) of study.
Respondents in this study included 282 students from different years and different types of nursing studies (full-time, part-time) at the Polytechnic of Health in Zagreb, 197 and nursing studies at the Polytechnic of Bjelovar, 85.
The study was conducted by using a specially designed questionnaire to try to capture the variables of the study, years of study, previous education, gender, and perception of communication barriers through 25 statements that were answered by a unique three-level Likert scale (1-I disagree; 2-I sometimes agree; 3-I almost always agree).
The findings indicate that students perceive some communication barriers related to communication education, then note the impediments arising from some ingrained attitudes, for example, that a good nurse primarily performs specific nursing interventions, which do not seem to require good communication with the patient.
Senior students have a higher degree of disagreement with claims that justify barriers and disruptions to communication, but are at the same time less trusting in the quality of their education in the field of communication. Similarly, full-time students are more inclined to accept communication barriers than part-time students. Although there are minor differences between students studying at the Zagreb Polytechnic and the Polytechnic of Bjelovar, it should be mentioned that both groups of students consider talking to patients to be a very common and important nursing intervention that cannot be bypassed regardless of the "crowd" in the waiting room. Nursing students feel that talking to patients cannot upset nurses and that they do not consider it a "luxury" that they cannot afford.
