Abstract
Otpad je jedan od ključnih ekoloških problema današnjice. Neselektivnim bacanjem otpada iz kućanstava i iz proizvodnje, od često vrlo vrijednog otpada proizvodi se smeće (degradirani otpad). Dodatni je problem što se vrlo često uz redoviti odvoz taj degradirani otpad odlaže na divlja odlagališta. Tek je u posljednje vrijeme u procesu približavanja standardima Europske Unije počelo intenzivnije ulaganje i izgradnja suvremenih uređenih odlagališta. Odlagalište komunalnog otpada je nasuta građevina čija izgradnja obuhvaća rješavanje čitavog niza problema, a u ovom su dotaknuti njeni geotehnički aspekti: problemi odvodnje i sprječavanja prodora površinskih i podzemnih voda (u odlagalište), problemi kontrole i odvodnje procjednih tekućina i plinova koji nastaju u odlagalištu izvedbom sigurnih brtvenih i drenažnih sustava, osiguranje statičke i seizmičke stabilnosti tijela odlagališta u svim fazama eksploatacije, te problemi slijeganja odlagališta i njegovih dijelova, koji zahtijevaju odgovarajuća tehnička rješenja.
