The paper highlights the problem of beach erosion and knowledge of proper methodologies for estimating and predicting it in order to slow down and prevent the destruction of coastline. Beaches are a natural defence against erosion teherefore beach material is constantly subjected to the destructive effects of waves. As a countermeasure, beaches are being replenished with new material. In the United Kingdom, it is common practice to supplement beaches with gravel due to its high efficiency in wave energy dissipation. In the last two decades, a great interest has been shown in knowing the morphodynamic behavior of gravel beaches in the field of coastal engineering. This paper describes the empirical SHINGLE model and the numerical XBeach-G model. Main equations of each model are descibed and so are field and laboratory measurements on the basis of which they are calibrated. XBeach-G models were calibrated according to the laboratory measurements used to calibrate SHINGLE models. Additionally, numerical and empirical models of two independent beach profiles were developed in order to compare the two methods and conduct a simulation of profile erosion due to the storm event and subsequent recovery of the beach.
