Karst, as a landform, covers approximately 20 % of the Earth's continental surface. One of the most widespread geological processes in karst regions, which can pose sudden hazards and risks to people, the environment, and infrastructure, is the occurrence of sinkholes. As a global phenomenon, sinkholes cause significant financial damage in various countries around the world, making them a subject of interest in the global scientific community. In recent decades, much has been learned about their formation, the causes of their occurrence, as well as their potential expansion through modeling with various numerical and analytical models, ultimately contributing to risk reduction. This thesis provides an overview of the mechanisms behind sinkhole formation on a global scale, as well as a review of the geology and hydrogeology of the Mečenčani-Borojevići area in the Sisak-Moslavina County, where over 100 sinkholes appeared as a consequence of the earthquake that struck the region in December 2020. The focus of the study is on the stability analysis of the largest sinkhole's slope and the impact of precipitation on its stability. This focus is driven by the fact that, during the period between the sinkhole's formation and its remediation, multiple rainfall events occurred, causing further slope sliding and an increase in the sinkhole's dimensions.
