The main topic of the final exam is the corrosion protection of steel structures. The thesis will cover corrosion protection through the methodology of applying common corrosion protection systems and monitoring the quality of their implementation. In addition to the description and elaboration of the basic premises of the thesis, the process of corrosion formation and the factors influencing its development on steel structures are presented. The influence of the environment in which the structure is located on the selection and application method of corrosion protection is also presented. The principle of protection is described using two main approaches: passive and active corrosion protection systems. The chapters dealing with passive protection contain a detailed description of the surface preparation for each protection system, without which proper and prescribed implementation of adequate protection would not be possible. The focus is on the most important and most frequently used protection systems: painting, galvanising and duplex system. The protection systems and their application are considered primarily from the point of view of design and durability, since the harmful effects of corrosion have the greatest impact on durability, which is closely related to the structural design. In conclusion, it is recognised that corrosion can be extremely harmful and dangerous to steel structures and that all factors affecting its development must be thoroughly investigated. Furthermore, high quality and thoroughly executed corrosion protection is crucial as it has a direct impact on the aesthetics, durability and service life of steel structures.
