The photographic image is the most common medium of two-dimensional static image information transfer. In order to ensure the selection of those photographic images that transmit the preferred information it is necessary to determine the objectiveness of their visual appropriateness. The choice of photographic images, regardless of whether they are realised as an individual medium or through other media, print or electronic, is primarily based on visual assessment. In order to ensure the selection of those photographic images that transmit the exact preferred information it is necessary to determine the objectiveness and repeatability of their choice. The information that is transferred by a photographic image is determined by its technical and syntactical aspects. Previous research has shown the possibility of objective representation of individual technical and syntactical characteristics of photographic images, and with that the semantics and transfer of information. In this dissertation research is conducted by visual comparison of created originals and editing of degraded originals of photographic images and by measuring to determine the total change in colour, light, chromatics, dynamic range, histogram values, line separation ability and similarity factor as indicators of their descriptive characteristics. Research indicates that there is a possibility to define the limit of acceptability of change in individual technical and syntactical values of a photographic image with keeping the transferred information, as well as the possibility of manipulating the individual parameters of a digital record of a photographic image with the purpose of changing the transferred information with keeping the iconic character of the photographic image, i.e., accepting the image as a real record. In the area of changes to the blue, green and red channels of the photographic image’s digital record within the limits of keeping the iconic character, research has proved a connection of the colour metrics of the photographic image and the perception of the photographic image, but also the connection of the limits of acceptability of the changes in the values of the record channel and the motif of the photographic image. The conducted research connects perception, i.e., visual assessment, of the photographic image with the values of the change in the dynamic range, exposition, tonal values, total change in colour ∆Eₒₒ, lightness and line separation ability as the parameters of objectiveassessment of changes in the defined photographic images in relation to the original photographic image and indicate that there is a connection between the listed metrics of a photographic image, the similarity factor and expert visual and assessment of a wider group of consumers. It confirms the possibility of objectiveness of the evaluation of the degradation of the original of a photographic image, i.e., of the acceptability of this degradation, while the degraded photographic image remains iconic in relation to the original photographic image
