Abstract (english) The emergence of the Internet as a new electronic medium was a milestone, not only in forms of communication and access to information, but it also contributed to the change of lifestyle in large extent. Thus, the emergence of the electronic mail, online commerce and banking, social networks etc., on one hand greatly facilitated everyday life, but on the other hand opened up new possibilities of privacy endangerment. Therefore, it is important to emphasize that Internet users need to be educated about media literacy in order to know how to protect themselves. Privacy can be jeopardized in many ways – by publishing personal information (such as name and surname, address, telephone number, bank account number etc.) and by publishing personal photos and videos. Although every Internet user is potentially vulnerable, children are still more liable to the dangers of privacy exploitation. That is why media pedagogy is very important so they can be educated from the earliest age. Furthermore, selfprotection and data encryption methods are some of the means of privacy protection. Legislation of the Republic of Croatia and the European Union are also of great importance in protection of privacy.
Privacy on the Internet, with reference to social networks and online search engines and their services, has been a topic of broad and current interest for quite a while now, therefore we decided to conduct a survey to find out what Internet users think about that subject. The study was conducted on the sample of one hundred and fifty-three respondents, using a quantitative method of exploratory survey. The results of the research have shown that Internet users are concerned about their privacy and that they rarely publish their personal information on the Internet. Also, Internet users consider themselves to be adequately media literate and consider that the Croatian law is not sufficiently protecting their privacy
