Abstract Cilj ovog istraživanja je opisati i dublje razumjeti kako osobe srednje dobi percipiraju traženje psihološke pomoći u tri problemske situacije: Nezaposlenost, Partnerski problemi i Depresija. U istraživanju je sudjelovalo šezdeset i devet muškaraca i žena ispunjavajući online Upitnik o percepciji traženja psihološke pomoći-tehnika dovršavanja priče, osmišljen u svrhu provedbe ovog istraživanja.
Abstract (english) The aim of this research is to describe and better understand how middle aged people perceive seeking psychological help in three key problematic situations: Unemployment, Relationship problems and Depression. Sixty-nine men and women took part in the study by filling out the „Perception of seeking psychological help – story completion task” online questionnaire, designed specifically for this research study. Using qualitative thematic analysis of the three story completion tasks we've identified seven superordinate themes relating to the perception of asking for counseling in three key problematic situations. The following five of these themes are present in all the three situations: Counseling is worth one's salt, Counseling is not a magic pill, The problem should be solved without asking for counseling, Stumbling blocks in psychological help seeking and A wind at one's back when seeking psychological help. Two superordinate themes are not present in all three problem situations. The first one is Psychological help for the gentler gender from the situation of Unemployment, which is related to the theme It is easier for women to open up from the situation of Partner problems, and second theme being The bitter consequences of not seeking psychological help specific to Depression. According to our findings it's evident that psychological help has both facilitating and inhibiting factors for people seeking psychological help. With quantitative analysis it was established that the participants reported the lowest intent of going to counseling in the event of unemployment, somewhat larger in the event of partner problems and the largest in the event of depression. Additionally, over one third of participants have had firsthand experience with seeking psychological help, with the majority of them being satisfied, while over half of the participants have had secondhand experience with seeking psychological help. The evaluated level of satisfaction with the experience of psychological help of the close person in question varies. Still, the number of partially or extremely unsatisfied people is very low. The findings of this research provide useful information for a variety of intervention programs focused on informing and familiarizing middle aged people with psychological counseling.
