This paper describes the historical review of the perspective of Turkey becoming a member of the European Union. Turkey applied for full membership in 1987, but accession negotiations were launched in October 2005. Main characteristics of Turkey, its occurrence and development will be described with the aim of understanding the complicated relations between Turkey and the European Union. The paper describes the political organization of modern Republic of Turkey, founded in 1923, which is a unitary parliamentary republic founded on principal of divided government on executive, legislative and judicial government. “Father of the Turks” Mustafa Kemal Atatürk has implemented many reforms in political, economic, social, justice and cultural sector, with the aim of creating a modern Turkey with western set of values. On the other side, the policy of the current Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the governing party “The Justice and Development Party” was criticized from the European Union, since its program allows violation of basic human rights, and since its program moves away from the principle of secularity. Erdoğan's policy results in many civil rebellions which then result with president restricting the freedom of media. As a result of everything mentioned, there was an attempt of a military coup in July 2016. The European migrant crisis has a significant impact on relations between Turkey and European Union, which peaked in October 2015. Since the goal of the European Union is to resolve the newly created situation, which is only possible by maintaining good relations with Turkey, EU-Turkey Joint Action plan has been enacted and has produced good results.
