Abstract (english) The aim of this paper was to validate the Croatian version of the Career calling questionnaire and to establish its relations with work engagement and career adaptability, and additionally with self-reported study performance, socioeconomic status and gender. Career calling is a new construct that is recently proposed and studied. Career calling is a developmental and dynamic construct that represents a prominent and self-determined goal of higher order by generating meaning and purpose for the individual. Career calling occurs before an individual is employed and evolves as a person matures (Praskova, Creed and Hood, 2015). It is typical for emerging adults, young people aged 18 to 25, and this transition period from adolescence to early adulthood is considered to be one of the key periods for making career decisions.
The questionnaire consists of 15 questions and contains three subscales: Other-oriented meaning, Personal Meaning and Active Engagement. The total of 299 students from different faculties of the University of Zagreb participated in the research. Results indicated a three-factor structure, which is the same as in the English version of the questionnaire. The reliability of the questionnaire was excellent (α = ,88). Career calling correlated highly and positively with work engagement and career adaptability, and moderately and positively with study performance. On the other hand, career calling did not correlate with gender and socioeconomic status. Using methods of hierarchical regression analysis, it was found that work engagement and career adaptability are good predictors of career calling.
The metric characteristics of the Croatian version of the Career calling questionnaire are good and encourage the use of the questionnaire for practical purposes, for example in the career counselling of high school students. Since this is the first study of a career calling in Croatia, further research is needed to expand knowledge on this new construct.
