Abstract (english) The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between personality and health amongst persons with multiple sclerosis. Ninety-seven individuals diagnosed with multiple sclerosis which are members of Association of multiple sclerosis societies of Croatia completed online survey assessing sociodemographic characteristics, personality and self-rated health. Questionnaire of sociodemographic characteristics assessed age, gender, marital and employment status, level of education, type of disease and disease duration. Results of croatian translation of BFI-2 personality questionnaire were computed as fifteen facets and five personality traits. Resuts of croatian version of SF-36 health survey were computed in the form of eight health domains and two main composite scores: mental and physical health and were norm based for croatian population. Results have shown no statistically significant gender differences for self-rated mental and physical health. Personality traits negative emotionality and conscientiousness are significant predictors of self-rated mental health, and said composite score is significantly correlated with all personality traits. We have not found significant predictors of self-rated physical health or significant correlations between the composite score and personality traits. On the facet level, self-rated physical health was only significantly positively correlated with facet intellectual curiosity, while self-rated mental health was both positively and negatively correlated to majority of personality facets. Personality trait extroversion is significantly positively correlated with vitality, mental health and social functioning. Agreeableness is positively correlated with social functioning, mental health and role emotional. Conscientiousness significantly positively correlates with vitality, social functioning, role emotional and mental health. Negative emotionality significantly negatively correlates with all health domains except for physical functioning and role emotional. Openness significantly positively correlates with mental health, physical functioning, vitality and bodily pain. The results of this study imply that the relationship between personality and health outcomes exists and that measuring personality of chronically ill persons could be an important part of therapeutic approach.
