Abstract
Ovim se radom nastoji ukazati na pojavu i kontinuiranu prisutnost lakonofilije (višestoljetne idealizacije Sparte) u različitim povijesnim razdobljima. Počevši od antičkih autora, koje se smatra odgovornima za pokretanje tog trenda, kronološkim će se redoslijedom analizirati pozitivna percepcija spartanskog društva sve do popularne kulture. Pored toga, rad će se osvrnuti i na utjecaj Bitke kod Termopila (480. g. pr. Kr.) u formiranju ovog fenomena. Naime, upravo je spartanski militarizam najviše podvrgnut idealizaciji i manipulaciji od strane različitih autora, tj. ideologija (npr. nacizam). S obzirom na to, cilj je ovog rada istražiti razloge zbog kojih je Sparta stekla svoju zavidnu reputaciju; postavit će se pitanje je li ona opravdana, odnosno u kojoj je mjeri idealizacija Sparte iskrivila njezinu povijesnu istinu.
Abstract (english)
This thesis aims to showcase the phenomenon of the continuous presence of laconophilia (a long-standing idealization of Sparta) in various periods of history. Starting with the works of ancient Greek authors, which are believed to be responsible for setting this trend in motion, this thesis will chronologically analyze the positive perception of the Spartan society through history as well as its impact on modern pop culture. Moreover, it will also review the impact the famous Battle of Thermopylae (year 480 BC) had in the forming of this phenomenon. Spartan militarism is namely subjected to idealization and manipulation by various authors and/or ideologists (i.e. Nazism). Taking that into consideration, the ultimate goal of this thesis will be to research the reasons behind why and how Sparta earned its enviable reputation as a superior military society. In that endeavor, it will also attempt to answer the question of whether that idealization was justifiable and to what extent it actually served to warp the historic truth of Sparta.
