Attachment refers to a close and lasting emotional bond with a significant person. It is formed in early childhood and it determines the way a person will experience and form romantic relationships later in life (Ajduković et al., 2007). People who are securely attached to their partner have a positive view of themselves and their partner, they feel loved and respected, and they look for a solution that benefits both of them when problems arise in the relationship (Hazan and Shaver, 1987). Insecure attachment style is divided into avoidant, preoccupied and fearful. The aim of this research was to examine the characteristics of the connection between different attachment styles in romantic relationships with self-esteem, jealousy and perfectionistic aspirations. The sample consists of 211 female students with the average age of 23 (M=22,71, SD=3,76) who completed the Inventory of Experiences in Close Relationships (Brennan et al., 1998), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale ((Rosenberg, 1979), the Multidimensional Jealousy Scale (Pfeiffer and Wong, 1989), and the Positive and Negative Perfectionism Scale (Terry-Short et al., 1995).. More than 77% of the participants were found to have a secure attachment style. All subtypes of jealousy (cognitive, emotional and behavioral jealousy) have a medium positive correlation with the dimension of anxious attachment, while only cognitive jealousy has a medium positive correlation with avoidant attachment. Anxious attachment is positively related to negative perfectionism, social perfectionism, and person-oriented perfectionism, while avoidant attachment is positively associated only with negative perfectionism. The participants were subsequently divided into two groups, more precisely, into groups with secure and insecure attachment styles. The differences between the two groups in the degree of jealousy and in the degree of expression of negative perfectionism were analyzed. Statistically significant differences between groups were obtained. The results of this research are mostly in line with findings from previous research. The knowledge gained with this research can be used in marriage counseling and family therapy with the aim of encouraging secure attachment style patterns and improving relationships between partners.
