The subject of this paper is the symbol of the raven in Croatian literature. In the beginning we generally define the meaning of the symbol, and the ways in which we understand symbols. After defining symbols come to the analysis of animal symbols within the national customs, as animal symbols as well as others, began from folk customs that need to be explained in detail. We will study the symbol of the raven. What is generally the raven symbol? What is the definition of the raven symbol? We will interpret the symbol of a raven within the myths and legends of peoples all over the world, before the advent of literature as we know it. We will explore the raven symbol in Croatian legends and folk customs and certainly the most famous stories about the raven of Medvedgrad, down to those lesser-known folk tales. The unavoidable Bible and the ways in which it used the raven symbol and for what purposes is a core part of this work. The raven symbol in Croatian literature is the part that will take us through literary periods and the Croatian writers that we worked on. We have taken Croatian writers of the period of national revival until the modern period who in their work mentioned the raven symbol to study the way in which they have used it, in what context it is placed and that was its role. Of course we also study the an essential writer of world literature Edgar Allan Poe and his "The Raven", which sealed the fate of a raven in the literature.
