The aim of this study was to determine the basic characteristics of the cohesion of young football players, and the relationship of the measured cohesion with the variables of chronological age and playing position in young football players. On a sample of respondents of 79 young football players aged 13 to 16, the scales of the cohesion questionnaire (GEQ Croatian version) were validated, and the cohesion variables confirmed satisfactory metric characteristics. Average scores on the cohesion scales ranged from 3.76 (task integration scale) to 4.50 (individual attractiveness to group – task scale). Different manifest forms of cohesion of young football players vary from medium to very high cohesion. Three out of a total of four possible differences were found among the cohesion variables between different age groups. The three younger age groups do not differ at all in terms of the degree of cohesion, and one age group (players aged 16) differs in cohesion from all other age groups. It is possible that the age group of 16-year-old football players is kind of specific in terms of its cohesion development or some other basic characteristic compared to all other age groups. No differences were found among the cohesion variables between groups of young football players who play in different playing lines (goalkeepers, defense, midfield and offensive players). Also, no differences were found among the cohesion variables between the groups of young football players who play in different playing positions on the football field (center back, fullback, defensive or offensive midfielder, central forward and winger). It is recommended to continue with the research of cohesion in young football players, while connecting cohesion with some other possible “interesting” variables (stability of the membership in a team; number of new players in team; leadership style of the coach; ...).
