Abstract
Multipla skleroza (MS) je kronična neurodegerativna bolest središnjeg živčanog sustava koja se manifestira kroz upalne procese i demijelinizaciju živčanih stanica u mozgu, kralježničnoj moždini i vidnim živcima. Uglavnom pogađa bijelu rasu, a njezina prevalencija je veća u područjima s većim brojem bijelaca. Žene češće obolijevaju nego muškarci. Imunosni sustav napada ove stanice, uzrokujući nepovratna oštećenja koja utječu na tijelo i psihu oboljelih. MS je poznata kao „bolest s tisuću lica“ zbog široke varijabilnosti simptoma i tijeka bolesti, koji se razlikuju od pacijenta do pacijenta. Napredovanje bolesti može biti postupno i nepredvidivo, a simptomi se mogu povremeno pojavljivati, mijenjajući svoju jakost i trajanje s progresijom bolesti. Intervencija u obliku ranog liječenja, rehabilitacije, kineziterapijskih tretmana i kontinuirane kontrole progresije bolesti nužna je za postizanje dugoročnih uspjeha u liječenju i očuvanju kvalitete života pacijenta.
Abstract (english)
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system that manifests through inflammatory processes and demyelination of nerve cells in the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. It mainly affects the white race, and its prevalence is higher in areas with a higher number of white people. Women are affected more commonly than men. The immune system attacks these cells, causing irreversible damage that affects the body and psyche of the patients. MS is known as "the disease with a thousand faces" due to the wide variability of symptoms and course of the disease, which differ from patient to patient. The progression of the disease can be gradual and unpredictable, and symptoms can appear intermittently, changing in intensity and duration as the disease progresses. Intervention in the form of early treatment, rehabilitation, kinesitherapy treatments and continuous control of disease progression is necessary to achieve long-term success in treatment and preserve the patient's quality of life.
