Objective: Taking into account the current operative methods of treatment and duration of postoperative recovery, the aim of this study was to verify the possibility of introducing a completely new surgical technique for treating Haglund’s disease. The aim was to prove that the introduction of ultrasound guided operative technique for Haglund’s disease could achieve more precise resection of the calcaneus and accelerate postoperative functional recovery. Methods: The study included 63 patients divided into three equal groups. Ultrasound assisted surgical technique was compared with current operative techniques for treating Haglund’s disease, endoscopic and conventional open surgical technique. Comparison between groups was performed by a series of functional tests to determine the rate of post-operative recovery, and measurements of plain radiographs and ultrasound images to determine the accuracy of calcaneus resection. Results: Results of functional tests showed significantly faster recovery in group of patients operated by ultrasound-assisted and endoscopic operative technique over conventional open surgical technique at a significance level of p <0.05, while the ultrasound assisted technique showed statistically significant improvement over the endoscopic technique in postoperative time using crutches. Results of ultrasound measurement of the size of the resection of Haglund’s deformity showed that ultrasound assisted surgical technique achieves most accurate resection of calcaneus with the smallest number of residues and relapse. Conclusions: Ultrasound assisted operative technique for treating Haglund’s disease can be introduced into clinical practice as one of the surgical treatment options for Haglund’s disease, and considering the results of its application, postoperative functional recovery could be accelerated and ultrasound assisted technique could reduce the percentage of inadequate resections.
