Introduction: Hemodialysis is a process which removes waste products of our metabolism whether there is a case of acute or chronic renal failure. Each year the number of patients on hemodialysis increases, and it is considered that in 2030 this figure will be doubled compared to 2010. The main goal of our research was to find out level of our patients knowledge about diet itself and to compare this data with laboratory findings and basic demographic and clinical characteristics. Respondents and methods: We surveyed patients on hemodialysis at the „Department of Nephrology and Dialysis“KBC Rijeka. A total number of 70 patients responded to all of our questions that were related to general information about their hemodialysis. They also resolved the quiz consisted of 10 questions. Laboratory findings have also been extracted from all of our 70 patients, although we referred mostly on albumin and total cholesterol. Results: Data analysis was carried out using Pearson correlation. Pearson’s correlation showed no statistically significant correlation between laboratory parameters and the duration of hemodialysis. However, we observed a statistically significant negative correlation between age of our patients and the quiz results (p=0.002). We also observed statistically significant positive correlation between quiz results and duration of hemodialysis (p=0.043), and a positive correlation between quiz results and self-consciousness about their own knowledge on hemodialysis (p=0.0016). Conclusion: The main limitation of this study is a small number of surveyed patients, so this kind of research should be extended to as many patients as possible. This research can be carried out even on the national level to compare the quality of individual centers in educating their patients about the nutrition on hemodialysis. Better nutrition means better dialysis, which ultimately means better quality of life and longer life expectancy of our patients.
