Ozljede kralježnice predstavljaju značajan zdravstveni problem treće životne dobi i zato je važno posebno obratiti pažnju u vidu prevencije ovakvih ozljeda.
Abstract (english) The purpose of the study was to draw attention to an increasing share of elderly patients, which is also reflected in typical age-related injuries and increases the burden on the health system of this segment in neurotraumatology. Also, to determine the number and proportion of patients older than 60 years treated at the Neurosurgery Clinic for spine injuries in June, September and December 2017. Also, the aim was to determine the share of regional coverage, the most common treatment method, the gender-related prevalence and the average age of the patients.
Examinees and actions: This study included 32 subjects over the age of 60 years with spine injuries who stayed at the Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka Neurosurgery Clinic in June, September and December 2017. All data were downloaded from the archive of the Clinic for Neurosurgery of Rijeka Clinical Hospital Center, and were processed in the Microsoft Excel program.
Results: In the analyzed time period, a total of 287 patients at the Neurosurgery Clinic were treated, out of which 32 patients (11.14%) over the age of 60 were received for spine injuries. The majority were women over the age of 70 with lumbar spine injuries. The percentage of patients that needed surgery was 19%, while the rest were treated by conservative treatment methods.
Conclusion: Due to prolonged life expectancy, the share of elderly patients in the population increased and thus the number of injuries of the elderly. Injuries were caused mostly by level drops. Often, it is sufficient to treat with immobilization, which is being carried out with prefabricated orbits today. Spine injuries are a major health problem of the third age and therefore it is important to pay particular attention to the prevention of such injuries.
