Benign prostatic hyperplasia is the most common benign tumor in older men. With its growth and the prevention of urinary flow, it can cause very severe consequences (LUTS). The cause of benign prostatic hyperplasia is not fully known, and the most important factors of its development are older age and androgen hormons. Correct diagnosis BHP is based on history, use of urinary tract questionnaire, physical examination (DRE), urine analysis, serum creatinine and prostate specific antigen concentration, and residual urine measurement. Lowering the symptoms in the lower part of the urinary system is the primary goal of thetreatment of BPH. The decision on treatment is made on the basis of data obtained by determining the International Sum of Prostate Symptoms (IPSS) and the results of diagnostic treatment. With mild symptoms, patients should change their lifestyle, hygienic and dietetic measures, also active monitoring is recommended. Patients with moderate and severe disorders should be treated. The treatment depends on the size of the prostate, the functional condition of the urinary system and the existence of complications. Today, we have numerous treatments available from phytotherapy, alpha-adrenergic antagonists, 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, antimuscarinic drugs, vasopressin analogs, beta-3 adrenergic receptor agonists, 5-phosphodiesterase inhibitors and combined therapies. If the medication therapy is unsuccessful or BPH complications are present, surgical treatment is recommended.
