The aim of this study is to analyze oral hygiene habits and attitudes of students of Dental Medicine, the School of Medicine in Rijeka, in comparison to the ones pertaining to the average student population, the students of the Faculty of Engineering in Rijeka. An anonymous questionnaire was filled out by 130 dental students and 25 engineering students and subsequently analyzed. Engineering students visit their dentist as often as dental students, and as many as 44% of all students consider that the dentist should be visited more often. Fourth and fifth year dental students are more likely to visit the dentist for a dental check-up, while 6% of dental students and 12 % of engineering students visit the dentist due to tooth pain. 30 % of all dental students and 52 % of engineering students think that the period of time spent brushing teeth should be prolonged. Dental students use the same toothbrush usually for 3 months, while engineering students change their toothbrush somewhat sparse. 100 % of smokers report that they are aware of the negative impact that smoking has on the oral cavity. Senior dental students in almost 100 % of cases consider themselves competent of giving oral hygiene instructions to patients, unlike first-year students. Toothbrush and toothpaste are most used means of maintaining oral hygiene, and there was an increase in use of dental floss with the increase of study year at the Study of dental medicine. Other means are used relatively rare. 60 % of engineering students never heard of interdental brush, or don´t know how to use it. Motivation and oral health knowledge are associated with the improvement of oral hygiene habits. Student attitudes should be further improved by initiating a program that would emphasize the importance of oral hygiene before the beginning of a clinical program.
