Gingival recession has been present throughout the evolution of the human species. Development and advancement of the oral hygiene and, from the other point of view, also the negligence have been influencing more frequent occurrence of such defects. Inadequate brushing technique and the use of hard toothbrushes have been seen as the main etiological cause for the occurrence of this defect. When it comes to the prevention of the gingival recession, it is therefore important to pay attention to oral hygiene, the means for it and the way it is conducted. Surgical procedure is indicated on the basis of the problems that are described by the patient. The two main criteria why patients decide for this procedure are aesthetics and dental oversensitivity of roots caused by poor root coverage. This is why patients have a different point of view on the success of the procedure from the one of the dentist. The aim of this research was to estimate the efficiency of coronally advanced flap (CAF), with or without CTG (connective tissue graft), in treating gingival recessions from the point of view of the dentist. Among 64 patients, there were 20 of them accidentally chosen, with 74 treated teeth altogether. Gingival recessions have been measured before and after the surgical treatment and the difference between the two results is expressed with the average of root coverage. The procedures resulted in a high percentage of root coverage, that is 79.9% with CAF and 83.4% with CAF + CTG. The difference was not statistically significant, which denies the hypothesis that supposes how the additional use of CTG can significantly affect the outcome of the treatment. CAF is a reliable and expected treatment of gingival recession.
