Vitiligo is an acquired skin disorder manifested by typical depigmentational skin changes. Skin lesions are milky white coloured and can appear anywhere on the human body. Most common places affected by the lesions are the extensor parts of the limbs, fingers, face and the navel area. In addition to the skin, the disease can also affect the hair, eyebrows, eyelashes and the area around the mucous membranes. The ethiopathogenesis has not yet been fully clarified; however, some of the factors responsible for the development of the disease include biochemical, autoimmune and nervous system factors, melanocyte structure disorders and stress. Environmental factors also play an important role in the development of manifested disease. The assessment of the disease according to the VASI index is important for choosing the appropriate treatment method as well as the monitoring of the course of the disease. The quality of life in patients is assessed by the DLQI index, since the manifested disease also affects their mental health. The goal of therapy is to achieve repigmentation and the therapy includes topical treatment with corticosteroid preparations, immunomodulators and vitamin D3 derivatives, phototherapy and systemic corticosteroid therapy. Surgical methods are used if previous therapies have not given satisfactory results.
