Puberty disorders represent a deviation from normal growth and development and can be classified into two main categories: precocious puberty and delayed puberty. Precocious puberty denotes the development of secondary sexual characteristics before the age of 8 in girls and before the age of 9 in boys. On the other hand, delayed puberty occurs if there is no development of secondary sexual characteristics up to the age of 14 in girls and 15 in boys or if there lacks an adequate progression of pubertal changes during a certain time period. In addition to these two main categories, there are other forms of early or inappropriate development, namely premature telarche, premature adrenarche and premature pubarche, as well as feminization in males and virilization in females. Basic treatment of patients with some of the pubertal disorders includes a detailed analysis of personal and familal medical history and a detailed physical examination, and it may include a determination of hormonal status. Further tests are prescribed depending on the results of the basic treatment and in case of a suspicion of a certain etiology of the disorder. Most patients with signs of pubertal disorders will not need treatment. The reason for this is that in 50% of children with signs of precocious puberty the changes will not progress or will even disappear, while in delayed puberty it is most often a matter of constitutional stagnation in growth and pubertal development.
