Social phobia is defined as a persistent fear of a person that other people will observe him or her closely and judge him or her negatively. As a result, a person who has a social phobia avoids social situations that he fears or experiences them with intense anxiety. When a person is forced to enter a phobic situation or enters it without expecting it, he experiences strong anxiety with the appearance of various somatic symptoms, such as redness, trembling hands, nausea, palpitations, sudden need to urinate and others. The etiology of the disorder is unknown, but it is believed that there is a moderate influence of genetic factors in the development of the disorder. Social phobia most often begins in early adolescence and has a chronic course that leads to significant impairment in educational and work functioning, life achievement, and leads to feelings of reduced quality of life. Comorbidity with other psychiatric disorders is common. Psychotherapeutic procedures and various medications are used in the treatment, the most important of which are serotonin reuptake inhibitors and cognitive behavioral therapy.
