Abstract
Recent research indicates that the interaction between the immune and endocrine systems plays a vital role in protecting tissues during pathogen encounters. Immune and endocrine cells are frequently found together in endocrine tissues, where they interact and influence each other's responsiveness. Furthermore, even when these cell types are located in separate areas, endocrine cells can receive signals from peripheral immune cells or vice versa. This immuno-endocrine interaction has been observed to collaborate in various organs to enhance antiviral immunity. In this study, we specifically investigate the impact of thyroid hormones on immune cell function. To that end, we infected groups of mice in parallel with MCMV and treated some with levothyroxine and some with thiamazole. We observed an impact of TH on cells of the innate and adaptive immune system, but it did not influence the overall dissemination of the virus to distant tissues. While there is no clear clinical application at the moment the exact mechanisms at play need to be studied further.
