The need for English as a professional language in medicine is nowadays beyond doubt. Scientific literature and Internet sources are examples that reveal the overriding necessity for understanding and expressing ourselves in written and spoken English. English has become so dominant as the international language of science, especially scientific publications, that its use seems to be necessary if one wants to be read or discussed outside one's own country. The formal teaching of English, overloaded with theoretical content, does not enable us to keep in touch with other professionals abroad. This manual is aimed at intermediate-level students. It consists of a variety of texts extracted from different sources. Some of them are altered and modified to suit the purpose. It covers common topics related to health, lifestyle, and prevention and provides themes for discussion. It will enable students' everyday professional communication in English and their written and oral competence, but it will develop their reading and comprehension skills as well. Objectives in studying the medical language are: • analyze words by dividing them into component parts • relate the medical terms to the structure and the function of the human body • be aware of pronunciation and spelling problems.
