As a tourist country, the Republic of Croatia is obliged to monitor the quality of the sea for bathing in accordance with the European Bathing Water Directive (2006/7/ EC) and the National Bathing Water Quality Regulation (Official Gazette 73/2008). The monitoring of coastal water quality is based on the determination of the number of microbiological indicators of faecal pollution, Esherishia coli and intestinal enterococci. In this study, the presence of an additional indicator of faecal pollution, the bacterium Clostridium perfringens, and its spatial and temporal distribution on the urban beaches of the western part of the city of Rijeka (Kantrida) was monitored. The survey was conducted during two bathing seasons (2021 and 2022), with sampling once a week. 12 locations polluted by freshwater inflows were included in the survey. The results obtained show that the concentration of Clostridium perfringens is influenced by physico-chemical parameters, sea and air temperature and salinity. Of the sites studied, A and B are the most polluted in September in both years observed, when precipitation is most intense. The concentration of Clostridium perfringens did not vary significantly depending on the time of day (morning - afternoon). In less than 1% of the samples, the concentration of Clostridium perfringens was above 1000 CFU/100 ml, which may pose a risk to the health of bathers.
