Hepatitis C virus infection is a global health problem. People all over the world are infected with hepatitis C virus and the infection usually leads to chronic hepatitis. Chronic hepatitis can have serious consequences such as cirrhosis or development of hepatocellular carcinoma. Until recently, interferon was the only therapeutic option for treating chronic hepatitis C virus infection. Therapeutic protocols based on interferon enable virus elimination only in a limited number of cases, often with numerous adverse effects. Moreover, some groups of patients could not benefit from interferon therapy, because they were contraindicated to use interferon. A new treatment chapter started in 2011, when direct acting antiviral drugs (DAAs) were introduced. DAAs specifically target the structural proteins of the virus. Since then, numerous new DAA-based therapeutic options have been developing very quickly. Today we live in a direct-acting antiviral era. DAAs enable patients who previously could not be treated for their HCV infection with old therapeutic options to be cured. Moreover, DAA-based therapy takes less time and fewer adverse effects have been noted. DAAs do not require changes in nutrition and patients can take the therapy orally. DAA-based therapy is thus very convenient for patients and only few of them discontinue the treatment regimen. This paper provides a concise overview of current therapeutic options for the treatment of hepatitis C virus infection with a review of their structures, mechanism of action and clinical use.
