Abstract
Samoubojstvo je autoagresivan čin s fatalnim ishodom, pri čemu težnja za usmrćenjem može, ali i ne mora, biti očigledna okolini. Suicidalno ponašanje obuhvaća suicidalne radnje (autoagresivne radnje koje nisu fatalne), suicidalne pokušaje (radnje koje bi trebale biti fatalne, ali ne uspijevaju) i uspješno izvršeno samoubojstvo. Starija životna dob i problemi koji nastaju u tom posljednjem životnom razdoblju predstavljaju važne rizične čimbenike za samoubojstvo. Starenje je fiziološki proces u životu svakog ljudskog bića i pobjeći od starosti ne možemo. Najčešći problemi koji prate ljude starije životne dobi su razne fizičke i psihičke bolesti, samoća, socijalna izoliranost i ugroženost, gubljenje životnog smisla, propadanje važnih životnih funkcija i tome slične prepreke. Svi nabrojeni problemi su ujedno i rizični čimbenici za samoubojstvo u kojem mnogi ljudi pronađu rješenje za nepodnošljive životne situacije. Isto tako, spomenute teškoće predstavljaju mete djelovanja u prevenciji samoubojstava populacije starije životne dobi. Za smanjivanje broja suicida iznimno je važna suradnja obitelji osobe pod rizikom i profesionalnih institucija, podizanje svijesti o problemu samoubojstva te destigmatizacija starijih i bolesnih ljudi. Ovaj rad želi skrenuti pozornost na populaciju koja je često zanemarivana u kontekstu suicida, upoznati čitatelja s terminologijom i pojavnosti suicida u starijoj životnoj dobi, predstaviti najvažnije čimbenike rizika i odgovoriti na pitanje kako pomoći. Posebni naglasak stavlja se na načine kvalitetne i strukturne prevencije koji, po rezultatima istraživanja, daju novu nadu u borbi protiv suicida.
Abstract (english)
Suicide is a self-aggressive act with a fatal outcome, where the aspiration to die can, but does not have to be, obvious to the observers. Suicidal behavior includes suicidal actions (self-aggressive acts that are not fatal), suicidal attempts (actions that should be fatal, but fail), and successful suicide. Elderly life expectancy and problems arising in the latter lifetime are important risk factors for suicide. Aging is a physiological process in the life of every human being and we can't elude old age. The most common problems that accompany older people are various physical and mental illnesses, loneliness, social isolation and endangerment, losing self-purpose, decaying of important everyday functions, and similar obstacles. All listed problems are also the risk factors for suicide in which many people find a solution to an unbearable life situation. Likewise, the mentioned difficulties are the targets of action in the prevention of suicides of the elderly population. To reduce the number of suicides, it is extremely important to co-operate with a family of persons at risk and professional institutions, raise awareness of the issue of suicide and destigmatize older patients. This paper draws attention to the population that is often neglected in the context of suicide, and wants to familiarize readers with terminology and the occurrence of suicide in older age, to present the most important risk factors and to answer the question of what can be done. Particular emphasis is placed on the quality and structural prevention that gives new hope in combating suicide.
