Late preterm infants are a specific group of infants born at 34+0 and 36+6 weeks of gestation. Even though they are similar to term neonates because of their birth weight and length, they are immature and prone to various complications. Aim of this study was to determine which are the most common complications and what are the clinical outcomes of late preterm infants during their initial stay at the maternity hospital. Data, about 420 late preterm infants born at the University Hospital Center Zagreb Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology during the two year period, were collected from medical documentation and retrospectively analized. Results showed that the number of infants born by caesarean section, number born from multiple births pregnancy, need for a higher level of care, stay in the incubator, need for transfusion, incidence of respiratory complications, incidence of infections and stay in the hospital were inversly proportional to gestational age. Number of infants born by vaginal delivery, full enteral feeding, birth and discharge weight were proportional to gestational age. Data analysis of phototherapy, hypoglycemia and anemia have not shown any correlation. All subjects have been discharged home without any need for special care or specific treatment. There were no fatal outcomes. In conclusion, even though they are considered to be a unique group, risk from individual complications between late preterm infants can not be generalized because it significantly depands on every week of gestational age. That is of great importance to know to make sure certain risks are not decreased or increased with the aim of optimalization of care during their stay in the maternity hospital.
