Nažalost, gotovo svi roditelji djece s prekomjernom tjelesnom masom netočno procjenjuju tjelesni status svog djeteta.
Abstract (english) Childhood overweight is a growing public health problem, both in the world, as well as in Croatia, and parents play an importan role in creating it. Unfortunatley, nearly all parents of overweight children misclasified the weight status of their child. Despite having a clear definition of overweight using growth charts, parents often use different methods when determining the weight status of their child, including more commonsense methods. Although they are much more precise in detecting the weight status of their child while using visual methods, parents are not keen on using verbal terms such as „obese“ or „overweight“. Furthermore, the visual normalization theory, which states that frequent exposure to overweight and obese body sizes leads to change in what is perceived as normal, has an even greater significance today. Parents often feel afraid of being judged and stigmatized, along with their child. Research shows a double-natured effect of parental perception. On the one hand, there is emerging evidence on negative outcomes of parental perception. Moreover, there are indications that children whose parents correctly perceived their body weight gained more weight throughout the following years as opposed to children whose parents were unaware of their overweight. Additionaly, those children were prone to developing certain mental disorders and lower self-esteem. On the other hand, there are positive aspects of parental awareness of their child's overweight, especially when it is combined with good communication skills and supportive environment that helps the child thrive and maintain healthy habits. More research is needed on parental perception and how it influences child development to ensure more effective both public health and clinical approaches to this growing problem.
