Abstract
Sedation and analgesia are incredibly important and frequently used aspects of hospital practice and even out of hospital life. Sedation refers to the administration of a sedative hypnotic agent with the hopes of reducing the patient's awareness or level of consciousness. Analgesia refers to administration of an analgesic drug to prevent or stop pain. It is very important to provide the right balance between sedation and normal physiology with the use of sedatives and analgesics keeping in mind side effects that go with these drugs. In the intensive care there are often patients that require sedation and analgesia for whatever reason, and these procedures often come hand in hand in a practice called Procedural Sedation and Analgesia (PSA). In this thesis the author is going to discuss the variety of methods of sedation and analgesia in the ICU. This includes the different drugs that can be used to achieve the desired outcome, as well as the procedures and interventions that can be used to achieve the same.

Sedacija i analgezija nevjerojatno su važne te često korišteni aspekti bolničke prakse pa čak i izvan same bolnice. Sedacija se odnosi na davanje sedativnog hipnotičkog sredstva s nadom da će to smanjiti pacijentovu svijest ili razinu svijesti. Analgezija se odnosi na davanje analgetika za sprječavanje ili zaustavljanje boli. Vrlo je važno osigurati pravu ravnotežu između sedacije i normalne fiziologije uz upotrebu sedativa i analgetika imajući na umu nuspojave koje idu uz ove lijekove. U jedinici intenzivnog liječenja često postoje pacijenti koji iz bilo kojeg razloga zahtijevaju sedaciju i analgeziju, a ti postupci često dolaze ruku pod ruku u praksi koja se naziva Proceduralna sedacija i analgezija (PSA). U ovom radu autor će raspravljati o različitim metodama sedacije i analgezije u jedinici intenzivnog liječenja. To uključuje različite lijekove koji se mogu koristiti za postizanje željenog ishoda, kao i postupke i intervencije koji se mogu koristiti za postizanje istog.
