Abstract Nesreće djece su rastući globalni problem koji opterećuje zdravstveni sustav i čini veliki udio smrtnosti djece. Svjetska zdravstvena organizacija procjenjuje da godišnje u svijetu preko 875.000 djece u dobi do 18 godina umire zbog nesreća.
Abstract (english) Child accidents are a growing global problem that burdens the health care system and accounts for a large proportion of child mortality. The World Health Organization estimates that over 875,000 children under the age of 18 die in accidents worldwide each year. Medical students, future doctors have a role to play in their prevention. A good and effective education is a prerequisite for a successful prevention policy. In this paper, an anonymous questionnaire examined the knowledge and attitudes of sixth-year medical students in Croatia about children's accidents. 333 students were included, which represents 58% of students in the last year of medicine in Croatia. Data were collected by a computer self-administering questionnaire which was divided into three sections. The first part of the questionnaire refers to the amount of education about child accidents and prevention that students encountered during their studies. The second part of the questionnaire consists of ten questions aimed at examining students knowledge about accidents and prevention, the third part refers to the respondents' attitudes about the problem and their competence to perform future work. Students stated in the highest percentage that they had heard about the problem of accidents / injuries of children in the subject Pediatrics and Pediatric Surgery. They are most familiar with burns and suffocations, and least with traffic accidents. About 75% state that they are not aware of child accidents at work. Outside the official curriculum, the most common source of information on children's accidents / injuries is the electronic media, and only a third of students cite professional journals as a source. In the answers to the knowledge questions, the correct answers were obtained in the range from 16.8 to 83.5%, and the lowest percentage of correct answers was obtained to the question about the most common cause of poisoning of children in Croatia. Only 54.1% of respondents answered correctly that in Croatia suicides are within the group of accidents among the first three causes as a cause of death in the age group 0-19. Students recognize the importance of the problem and have positive attitudes, and 55.6% and 57.1% state that they are motivated to discuss accidents with child patients or their parents. However, only 9% state that they feel confident that they can answer patients ’questions about preventing children’s accidents. In conclusion, we can say that the curriculum dealing with the problem of child accidents in Croatia is insufficient and further improvement and integration of the curriculum is needed to be more efficient and result in higher competence of students to deal with this problem.
